Seychelles gets second Rotary club |23 August 2013

Seychelles has a second Rotary club – The Rotary Club of Victoria - Coco de Mer -- and it was admitted as a member of Rotary International (RI) by the issue of a certificate signed by the 2012-2013 RI president Sakuji Tanaka on June 14, 2013.

The official charter ceremony will be held in November in the presence of district governor Jean Ravelonarivo and immediate past district governor Alain Lebihan.
The new club has been sponsored by the existing Rotary Club of Victoria, which has been present here in Seychelles since 1969. Over the last 44 years this club has been promoting the RI motto which is ‘Service Above Self’.

However, since their weekly meetings are on Tuesdays at noon, it was felt that to meet the object of Rotary opportunities should be given to professionals and business leaders, ladies and men who are taken up by their professional activities during the day but who believe in the ideals of Rotary, to join the family and to serve both the local and international communities.

Thus the Rotary Club of Victoria - Coco de Mer was born and it meets on Thursday evening. The Rotary family in Seychelles is now bigger and bolder to serve the community!

The new club has been founded by 22 members of different professions and there is now 49 Rotarians in Seychelles. Even though the two clubs are independent, they will operate within the framework of RI and its members as per Rotary Code of Conduct.

The members have been at work already . After Dr Malulu came as guest speaker at a regular meeting a few weeks ago, the first community project of the Rotary Club Victoria – Coco De Mer was a visit to the Wellness Centre at Les Cannelles. The objective was to meet the patients in the “detox” programme and develop an awareness programme that could help the unfortunate by having a new start in life….

There is no doubt the creation of this new club will do good to Seychelles.
