The drug plantation that the NDEA discovered on Praslin

A 20-year-old male from Praslin is to appear before the Magistrates court today after being arrested by agents of the National Drugs Enforcement Agency (NDEA) during an operation on Praslin.

The 20-year-old was arrested on Friday August 30, 2013 with a large amount of money and the NDEA also seized over 900 cannabis plants varying in height from four centimetres to one metre.

In a communiqué, the NDEA said the arrest came as a result of a six-week surveillance operation and that this was a very elaborate and skilfully farmed plantation.

The plantation was divided into four areas with plants at the various stages of maturity.

The planter had dug a trench around each area ensuring that the larger plants would not take all the nutrients and also to assist in the watering of these. He also had cooking and sleeping facilities and an area for hiding his money.

After being arrested, the 20-year-old was taken to the NDEA headquarters on Mahé for the purpose of investigation.
