New book documents living heritage of Seychelles |09 September 2013

The Seychelles National Heritage and Research Section (SNHRS) has launched its first ever in-house publication called ‘Living Heritage of Seychelles – A collection of exhibitions’.
The publication is a compilation of three exhibitions mounted by the SNHRS in its gallery at the La Bastille building.

The publication takes readers through research and documentation on the importance and uses of medicinal plants in Seychelles namely ‘Bwa Torti’ (Morinda Citrifolia) and Bred Mouroum (Moringa Oleifera) and the use of intangible cultural heritage in the Seychelles context.

The Intangible Cultural Heritage exhibition was one of the awareness programmes for Heritage Week 2012 (April 17-21), the ‘Bwa Torti’ exhibition was mounted on the occasion of the Africa Traditional Medicine Day (August 31, 2012) whereas the ‘Bred Mouroum’ exhibition was part of the Festival Kreol activities at the SNHRS (October 26-31).

The making of this booklet comes in the wake of numerous requests for copies of the exhibitions from visitors at the La Bastille gallery. Given the importance and clarity of the information in the exhibitions and taken into account the visitors’ requests, the SNHRS found it appropriate to give these research documents its due recognition by compiling the materials into one booklet.
The booklet also falls within the SNRHS’ prerogative to research, document, preserve and promote Seychelles cultural heritage.

The SNHRS pointed out that the new publication is a reference book for researchers and visitors on the work it is carrying out and also an educational tool for teachers.

It also contributes positively towards the dissemination of research documents compiled by the SNHRS and creates public awareness of the richness of the local cultural heritage and the need for protection, valorisation and revitalisation.

Presented with a copy of this new book, the Minister for Tourism and Culture Alain St Ange said that it will “contribute immensely to the dissemination of informed, documented and well researched documents by the SNHRS”.
