Disabled acquire computer skills |11 September 2013

A group of 12 people with disabilities along with three parents received their certificates yesterday afternoon after following courses in basic computer skills.

The aim of the project was to improve the quality of life and financial situation of the disabled and their parents through providing them with the necessary basic computer skills to communicate, work and creatively use Information Technology (IT).

The course, which comprised six sessions, took place during the months of May to August at the Computing and Additional Learning Centre at Dr Chetty’s Health Center in Victoria.

The course has been facilitated by the Love and Care Association, in existence since May 2012 with the aim of not only to promote the welfare of the disabled, but also to support and assist the disabled and their parents with their programmes and activities, so that they become more productive.

To realise this project, the association gained financial support from the 5th cycle of the Economic Reform Social Programme (ERSP) spearheaded by the Liaison Unit of Non-governmental Organisation of Seychelles (Lungos).

Chief executive of Lungos, Steve Lalande, pointed out that developing computer skills is indispensable not only for this group of disabled but to all those around them who will be able to see the new skills they have acquired.

“It will help them in their own research work and allow them to be independent in an era where everything is computer-based,” added Mr Lalande.
Also present at the certificate presentation ceremony was the manager of the Computer and Additional Learning Centre, Clivy Albert, who also facilitated the course.

One of the participants, Alesha Seraphine, thanked all who made the course a success and helped them to develop their understanding of computing, hence preparing them for the world of work.

The chairperson of the Love and Care Association, Anne Jacques, pointed out that the association needs to support the disabled morally and also through the activities organised and their parents are not left behind as they also benefit.
