Minister Meriton’s message on the occasion of International Day of Older Persons |01 October 2013

‘Country built on foundation laid by previous generations’

Today, Tuesday October 1, is the International Day of Older Persons and the day is being celebrated under the theme ‘The future we want; what older persons are saying’.

On this occasion, Designated Minister Vincent Meriton, who is also the Minister for Social Affairs, Community Development and Sports, has sent out a message for all older persons in Seychelles.

Minister Meriton’s message reads: “As we commemorate the International Day of Older Persons, we reflect on the presence of the elderly in our lives. We recognise their influence and impact in our personal development. We are grateful for their contribution and for the opportunities they have created that allow every Seychellois to grow and prosper.

“The achievement of a country is built on a foundation laid by previous generations. Our great grandparents, grandparents and parents, who are today the older persons we want to honour, did not build on sand. Our country’s foundation has been laid in stones and on solid ground. Centered on a tradition of strong families, responsibility, hard work and respect, it is this very foundation that has allowed us to stand firm so many times in the face of social and economic adversity. It is with this in mind that government commits itself to meet the changing needs of our ageing population, enabling them to live in their own homes and communities longer.

“As a society, we are adapting today to the realities of a changing world.  With the macro economic reform programme in 2008 and with the social renaissance initiative in 2011, our generation is finding its place and role in this interconnected global village. We have proven our resilience. We have sacrificed.

And we are determined to do better. This strength and inspiration is our inheritance from our elderly. It is what keeps us standing while others crumble.

“So today, as we honour our older persons, let us remain connected with them. They are after all the original architects of our society. Their opinion will always be relevant and should always be valued. I call on the youth population today to keep the door of communication open between them and their elders and to pay close attention to what they are saying. Their savoir faire can inform and guide each and everyone in the society. Let us remember, all of us, who are today successful in our personal, family or professional lives, that it was together with our elders that we sowed the seeds of success. So, when we reap this rich harvest today, let us share it with those who held our hands, who guided our actions and prayed so fervently for our success.

“On behalf of government, I wish all older persons in Seychelles a happy international day.”
