Families get keys to new homes |11 October 2013

It’s always a happy feeling when one gets the keys to his/her new home.

For young Christopher Pouponneau, this is no exception.

Christopher is the youngest of three sons and is looking forward together with his parents to move into their new home at the ex-Chetty housing estate, Anse Aux Pins.

Although he still remembers when their original flat caught fire in the early hours of August 15, 2010, Christopher is happy to have his new home.

“It’s much bigger with three bedrooms and two toilets. The old one had just two bedrooms and one toilet. We are also on the first floor like before. It’s a nice house,” he said.

The Pouponneau family is one of three who got the keys to their new homes yesterday morning at the ex-Chetty housing estate. The other two families are Rosette and Revera, while a fourth family has decided not to come back.

The Pouponneau, Rosette and Revera families used to live in the original flats that were destroyed by fire and the Seychelles government has rebuilt the four three-bedroom units on the same location.

These units have been built by Sai-Fu Enterprise at a cost of R2,205,088. Besides the three bedrooms and two bathrooms, each unit has a sitting room, a verandah combined with dining room, a utility room and fire extinguishers.

When addressing the tenants and those present, land use and housing principal secretary Joseph François said the handing over of the flats is part of the activities organised by the Ministry of Land use and Housing to commemorate World Habit Day which fell on October 7 and celebrated under the theme ‘Urban Mobility’
“The ex-Chetty housing estate is an urban part of Anse Aux Pins which is developing at a fast rate. This is why we have added some modern features to the new building and at the same time kept the Creole touch,” said Mr François, who also thanked the tenants for their patience as they go through the relocation process once more.

Member of the National Assembly for Anse Aux Pins, Meggy Marie, thanked the families who had been relocated to the ex-Onezime estate after their houses burned down, for their patience and told them to maintain their new homes and help make the ex-Chetty housing estate become a good neighbourhood.

Before joining Property Management Company’s customer relations officer Michel Roucou in presenting the tenants with the keys to their homes, senior customer services officer Marlene Denis thanked the Ministry of Land use and Housing for reconstructing the four units.

She told them to take care of their homes and to avoid getting involved in unlawful activities as it takes a long time to build a house which can be consumed by fire in just under an hour.
