Survey to gauge service offered by home carers |05 April 2013

The Social Protection Agency will carry out a survey aimed at evaluating the level of service being offered by the home carers.

Post-secondary students will be assigned to carry out the survey from April 22 to 26 in all districts on Mahé, Praslin and La Digue.

The results of the survey will also help the agency to validate information already on its database, to make it more credible.

The agency’s deputy chief executive Marcus Simeon said the survey will help to identify the training level and qualifications of the home carers.
He said the agency’s vision is to train those individuals offering such service, hence professionalise their work.

Through these training the home carers will be able to get a certificate which will confirm that they are able to provide such a service.

Mr Simeon said the data collected from the survey will then be analysed and this will help the agency formulate a policy regarding the agency’s vision.
He added that no similar survey has been carried out before and is now urging the home carers and recipients to take part and to cooperate.

There are about 27,000 home carers in the country and they work for either four hours a day or full day.
The questionnaire will be in Creole and it is divided into two sections - one for the recipient and the other for the home carer.

A workshop was organised this week in the agency’s boardroom for a group of people who will supervise the work being done during the week the survey will be carried out.

The workshop led by statistician John Betsy was aimed at equipping those supervisors with the needed skills and knowledge on how to conduct the survey.
