On Sunday June 27, at the Cascade community centre, banker Morel got his calculations right despite dropping a game to losing finalist Reuben Port Louis on his way to lifting a third consecutive President's Cup after past wins in 2002 and 2003.
In a nail-biting best-of-seven 501 final during which young Port-Louis played one of his best games but was let down by lapses of inconsistency, while Morel was able to keep his concentration to claim victory on a 4-1 score.
Morel, it is to note, had defeated Charles Decommarmond 2-0 in the best-of-three 501 quarterfinal and Lambert Monthy 3-0 in the best-of-five 501 semifinal.
As for Port-Louis, he beat Antonio Gomme 2-1 in the best-of-three 501 quarterfinal and Jean Belle 3-0 in the best-of-five 501 semifinal.
Twenty-two players turned up for the annual event and they were divided into two groups of 11.
After the completion of the league phase with all players having played each other once, the first four in each group qualified for the quarterfinals.
