Array of activities on offer for National Day of the Disabled |09 July 2004

Celebrations to mark this year's National Day for the Disabled, annually celebrated on July 11, kick off this morning at the School for the Exceptional Child with an array of entertainment activities. This means double celebrations for the school, which will also be celebrating 10 years since it moved to its location at Roche Caiman.

Activities at the school will start with the blessing of Father Gerard, followed by an address by Muriel Manes, head-teacher of the school. The National Brass Brand will also be there to bring additional vibes to the celebrations while students and teachers will make various dance, poem and song performances.

Five teachers will also be rewarded for serving the school for 25 years.
The highlight of the day will be the donation of 10 wheelchairs and a washing machine by two businessmen.

Attendees will also get a glimpse of the various activities organised by the school over the last 10 years through a picture exhibition.
The disabled on La Digue will be hosted to a special lunch on Sunday at the district's community centre.

This year's National Day for the Disabled will feature the official launching of the Association of the District Disabled Support Group by Minister for Social Affairs and Employment Vincent Meriton on July 12 at the International Conference Centre. The ceremony will start at 3 p.m. and will be attended by disabled from all districts in the country.

On the same day, disabled from the Rehabilitation Centre will celebrate their day with a variety show and a special lunch.
