Cricket: Vijay League-Mixed start for students |16 July 2004

Playing in both of the opening fixtures, USAIM first picked up a convincing win against
Luckstars, before slumping to defeat in the face of a quick-scoring Supercats in their second outing.

The opening match took place at Stad Popiler and saw the students batting first against an indifferent Luckstars bowling line-up.

Rajeev knocked up 33 not out, Faique 19 and Girish 12, and with Bertram's 3 for 25 and Buddika's 3 for 26 the pick of the bowlers, runs kept coming throughout the order.

All out in the 28th over, USAIM set the 'Stars a target of 136, far from impossible, but too much of an ask for an out-of-form Luckstars.

Bandula and Suranga chipped in with 26 and 23 respectively, but the wickets tumbled quickly and 3 for 28 by Siddesh and a remarkable 2 for 5 by Abishek saw the Stars eclipsed, all out for 98 off 21 overs.

The students went into the second match, again played at Freedom Square, buoyed by their opening win, and after winning the toss set about scoring a near identical 137.
A Sahil/Girish partnership of 29 and 28 set the scene, but Deepak's 4 for 6 off 6 overs once again proved the young bowler's class and kept the run rate down.

USAIM hit 137 for 9 off their 30 overs, before Supercats set about a quick-fire destruction of their total.

Sanjeev blasted his way to 43 and newcomer Mukesh hit 37 on his debut as the 'Cats pushed along a winning run rate of more than 8 an over to reach 138 in only 17 overs.

Following the loss, USAIM will have a chance to make it 2 from 3 this Sunday as they meet Mahe Kings for the latest match in the Vijay League.
