Mr Schneider offering preliminary results of his study

Zurich University Masters students Ueli Schneider and Saskia Günther addressed a raft of sustainable tourism issues, in front of an audience of Ministry of Tourism, Seychelles Tourism Marketing Authority (STMA) and private business representatives.

Mr Schneider's study examined the possibility of introducing an eco-labelling system for the country's hotels, to spotlight their levels of environmental friendliness.

Having spent the last four weeks in Seychelles examining the current eco-labelling situation, Mr Schneider was able to offer only preliminary results, but, having conducted a four-month study in 2003, Ms Günther delivered a detailed presentation on possible tourism development strategies for La Digue.

After identifying a number of different development routes for the island Ms Günther surveyed the attitudes of Diguios and tourists to determine which options met with the broadest support.

Once her extensive surveys had been completed Ms Günther found that islanders and tourists alike favoured options focusing on La Digue's Creole heritage and nature preservation.

Having delivered her presentation on Mahé Ms Günther will next travel to La Digue for another presentation of her findings and to allow the local community to suggest any changes they think should be made.

From there the report will be handed over to the Ministry of Tourism and Transport and on to the Cabinet of Ministers for approval.

The report by Mr Schneider is due to be presented to the Ministry in November.
