Football: ‘Play Soccer, Make Peace’ competition-Goals galore on opening day |25 February 2005

Nine goals were scored as South Olympic Youth and St Francis Youth progressed to the quarterfinal stage of the competition being played on a knockout format.

Under the guidance of coach Patrick Cafrine, South Olympic Youth had to claw their way back into the game and then win on penalties.

St John Bosco Youth’s striker Jean-Paul Marguerite got a hat-trick in the competition’s first match with goals in the ninth, 67th and 81st minutes. But, his heroics weren’t enough to give his team victory as Dominique Joseph (36th), Dereck Volcy (47th) and Jones Larue (49th) scored for South Olympic Youth.

In the penalty shootout, both teams needed six tries to decide who will progress to the quarterfinals. After Jones Larue’s effort hit St John Bosco’s goalkeeper Ricky Jeannie’s right post and the ball rolled in front of goal and out of danger, Mangel Freminot, Hervé Adrienne, Terry Larue, Dominique Joseph and Nichol Esparon scored for St Francis Youth.

St John Bosco Youth missed their first and last penalties through Jemmy Edmond and Neddy Labiche, while Livio Valentin, Jean-Paul Marguerite, Kholvin Ernesta and keeper Ricky Jeannie scored theirs.

South Olympic Youth were to meet Northern Dynamo Youth last night for a place in tomorrow’s semifinals.

In the day’s second encounter, St Francis Youth edged Foresters Youth 2-1 to set up a quarterfinal fixture against Light Stars Youth at 7.30 p.m. on Friday.

With coach Camille Greslé directing things from the substitutes bench, the St Francis Youth team weathered Foresters Youth’s storm before taking the lead in the 33rd minute.

Defender Kieren Morel’s long shot hit the underside of Foresters Youth’s keeper Alistair Barra’s bar and back into play. Lurking dangerously inside the penalty area, Marlon Belle pounced on the rebound to strike the ball into the net.

Despite trailing, Foresters Youth looked dangerous every time they went on the attack but they were unlucky not to score.

St Francis Youth scored a second goal in the 52nd minute through Stephane Barallon. His 30-metre direct free-kick beat keeper Barra.

Hendrick Labonne gave Foresters Youth some hope when he lobbed the advancing St Francis Youth goalkeeper Danny Larue in the 79th minute, but his team could not find the equalizser to force a penalty shoot-out.

It is to note that all matches last 80 minutes (40 minutes each half).
