Volleyball: African Club Championship-Losing start for Arsu |05 April 2005

Captain Marie-Ange Bouchereau and company lost 19-25, 14-25 and 14-25 to the Egyptians in the tough group B which also comprises defending champions Kenya Pipeline, last year’s runners-up NC Bejaia (Algeria) and National University of Rwanda (Rwanda).

Kenya Commercial Bank (Kenya), Inter-Club (Congo), Telkom Kenya (Kenya) and GS Chlef (Algeria) have been drawn in group A.

According to reports from Kenya, although Sunday’s match was one-sided and in favour of the Egyptians, the Seychelles side (Arsu) displayed a lot of talent leaving no doubt about their future.

In their second match on Monday, Arsu, who are making their second participation in the championship after their debut in 1997, were to play Algerian side NC Bejaia who were brushed aside 3-0 (25-16 25-22 26-24) by Kenya Pipeline in the championship’s first match on Saturday.

In a group A match on Sunday, Telkom Kenya succumbed to a 2-3 (15-25 25-14 25-19 25-27 5-15) defeat at the hands of Algeria’s GS Chlef.

Kenya Commercial Bank also beat Inter Club of Congo in their first group A match but the result was not available at the time of going to press.

It is to note that six teams have pulled out of the championship, leaving the organisers to run the competition with nine sides, three of them coming from host country Kenya.

The six teams who have apologised for not being able to honour their participation in the annual championship are Kampala City Council (Uganda), Tanzanian Prisons (Tanzania), Asec Mimosa (Ivory Coast), El Shams (Egypt), AES Sonel and Injis (Cameroon).
