Silhouette gets new book box service

Residents of all ages register and borrow books after the launch

The initiative was the result of a tripartite effort between the national library, Island Development Company and the Ministry of Education and Youth.

At hand to see the launching which took place at Silhouette School were a cross section of the residents of ages varying from a few to over 60 years, and officials from the three organisations.

The school's headteacher, Fred Lawrence, said that the increased frequency of book delivery will encourage every resident who has a desire to read to do so.

"Previously they came, but seeing there were no new titles they gave up and lost interest in the library," he said.

He said that adult learners wish to practice what they learn and the new service will be a great help.

It was the national education for all coordinator Jones Belmont who launched the new service.

He said although there is a high degree of political commitment to support educational programmes in Seychelles, an even higher level is necessary.

"When the politicians sign commitments saying they support education, they should follow up their words with action," he said, adding that although the basics are usually there in the first place, such facilities as photocopiers are often missing because they have never been installed in the first place or as a result of their breaking down.

Immediately after the launching, the head of the library's mobile service Ginette Gerry registered new library users who not only borrowed books, but were soon seen enjoying reading the newly-supplied titles in the compound of the school.

The island's manager Joycelin Humphrey said there are only 25 pupils at the school, but all residents can borrow the books, including a further 200 construction workers who are putting up a hotel on the island.
