The foundation’s secretary Lekha Nair announced this on Thursday when two benefactors presented two cheques worth a total of R56,650 to NEF at Liberty House.

The first cheque was for R34,650 and was handed over to Mrs Nair and foundation member Nirmal Shah by Rod Thorrington of Diamond SA (Seychelles) Ltd, whose company runs duty free jewellery shops on Mahe and Praslin.

The other cheque, worth R22,000 came from the majority party in the National Assembly, and was presented by Hon. Patrick Herminie and Hon Rukiya Jumaye of the Seychelles People’s Progressive Front (SPPF).

“Of the amount so far spent, 1.2 million has gone to families for the purchase of cement, iron sheets and plywood,” Mrs Nair said, adding that the rest of the money went to assist fishermen who were affected by the disasters, with some of the funds being used for clean-up work.
