Victoria Hospital gets medical supplies from Cyprus

PS Loustau-Lalanne shows samples of the medicines on display as Professor Theocharous looks on

The donation of 20 boxes of medicines, which include antibiotics, painkillers and anti-fungal treatment, is worth about US $8,000 (approx. R40,000). Samples of the medicines were presented Wednesday May 4 to the principal secretary of Health, Maurice Loustau-Lalanne, by the organisation's Honorary President, Professor Eleni Theocharous.

The presentation ceremony, held at the Victoria Hospital, was attended by the Health & Social Affairs minister, Vincent Meriton, the Honorary Consul for Cyprus in Seychelles, Panos Papakokinos, and the vice-president of Doctors of the World, Maria Angela Siakalli, among other health officials.

The donation has been made possible following a request made by Minister Meriton to the Honorary Consul for Seychelles in Cyprus, Andreas Philokyprou, during last month's consul conference at Plantation Club.

When presenting the samples, Professor Theocharous, who is also a paediatrician and a member of the Cyprus Parliament, said they were happy to have responded to the medical needs of the Victoria Hospital.

She said her country and the organisation was looking forward to collaborate in other areas with the government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

She has promised that the hospital will receive another consignment of medical supplies soon.
Accepting the donation, PS Loustau-Lalanne said the new stock of medicines came at an opportune time when the ministry was in a process of re-organisation to bolster its service delivery.

He said he hopes that future collaboration between Doctors of the World and the Health department would focus on exchange of expertise in child development, an area in which Professor Theocharous has already expressed interest to contribute.
