Judo: 26th African Judo Championship-Labrosse and Baker set and ready to fight |13 May 2005

Labrosse (on top) will be out to make up for last year’s unfortunate loss  Baker (on top) will compete in the 81-kg category

Accompanied by Cuban coach Juan Carlos Suarez, Labrosse (60-kg) and Baker (81-kg) left the country on Tuesday May 10, a day after they arrived here following a two-week training camp in Italy.

Head of delegation Cedric Thomas will only leave for South Africa Saturday May 14.
The 26th African Judo Championship will run from May 14 to 24 at the Indoor Sports Centre of the University of Port Elizabeth.

Good performances by the two judokas will earn them valuable points which will count towards qualification for the Jeux de la Francophonie in Niger in December this year.

It is to note that human error cut short Labrosse’s adventure in the 25th African Judo Championship in Tunisia last year and it is very likely that he will be all out to make up for the unfortunate loss.

Coach André César told Sports Nation upon his return from the championship that Labrosse was winning his 60-kg division fight by a yuko but was penalised for two non-existent fouls.

The bout ended in a stalemate after the five-minute spell and in the five-minute extension, Senegalese Gora Ndiaye won by koka to progress to the quarterfinals.

Labrosse thus failed to qualify for the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, but through an invitation he was able to make his second consecutive appearance in the Olympics.
His first was in Sydney, Australia, in 2000.
