Basketball: League championship-Baya stay in the groove, Cobras hold Bullets to record low one point in one quarter

Bel Air’s Boniface (no.15) scored a season-high 30 points against Juniors

Baya 90 ... Angels 69

Baya will enjoy a break this coming weekend and they will surely regroup on Sunday to watch big guns PLS Hawks and Premium Cobras in action.

Before the well-deserved break after having held on to the Men division 1A leadership with 11 points from six games, Baya, coached by Jude Talma, condemned Angels to their third defeat on a 90-69 score.

With Luciano Moumou who was on the verge of joining Cascade Bullets bringing his support to the team, Baya had three players in double digits – Nigerian Ugoh 19, captain and playmaker Giovanni Laval 16 and Michael Cupidon 12.

For winless Angels, Evans Hollanda scored 19 points and skipper Steven Servina added 18, including four 3-pointers.

Premium Cobras 84 ... Cascade Bullets 57

Defending champions Premium Cobras warmed up for their tough match-up with PLS Hawks with an 84-57 victory over Cascade Bullets.

Coach Steve Hoareau got his team to play hard on defence and they restricted the Bullets to just one point in the third quarter – a record low in the top division - while scoring 27.

Centre Lenny ‘Bad’ Aglaé got off the bench to score 22 points, while Nigeria playmaker Benjamin Adayehi added 18 and swingman Cyril Agrippine contributed 14 in Premium Cobras’ second win in as many matches.

Ronny Julienne (14 points) and playmaker Kenneth Sophie (10) were the two players who scored in double digits for the Bullets who now have seven points after two wins and three defeats.

PLS Dynamics 69 ... SMB Razorback 64

After failing to win some close matches in their previous games, PLS Dynamics, led by playmaker Isaiah Rose with 17 points, including two 3-pointers, collected their first win against SMB Razorback. The final score was 69-64.

Centre Emmanuel Larue added 14 points and Mickey Esparon 10 to the long-awaited win, the team’s first in four outings for five points.

Jean-Paul Camille once again led SMB Razorback, coached by Pascal Fostel, in scoring with 18 points, six of which came from beyond the 3-point arc.

With one win in six matches, SMB Razorback are in fourth position with seven points.

Bel Air 93 ... Juniors 30

With a season-high 30 points from captain Thyra Boniface in the 93-30 win over Juniors, defending champions Bel Air brought their points tally to nine after five games to close the gap to three points on leaders Anse Etoile Stars in the women’s league.

Lindy Aglaé chipped in with 23 points and Malagasy forward Lalatiana Razaiarisoa added 18 as Bel Air steamrollered inexperienced Juniors, who had only Jennifer Bonne in double figures with 10 points.

Runners-up Mont Fleuri, who have played six games like leaders Stars and one more than Bel Air, collected two wins in four days and they now have 10 points.

The Mont Fleurians, who have lost to both Bel Air and Anse Etoile Stars, got 20 points from captain Berndaette Songor and 14 from centre Rcahel Labrosse in the 69-35 win against Cadettes last Saturday, three days after beating Hackers73-57.

Sixth-placed Juniors rallied from the heavy defeat against Bel Air to win 51-34 against bottom-of-the-table Hackers on Sunday on the back of 20 points from Jennifer Bonne.

Meanwhile, in three Men division 1B matches, AAP Brothers beat Mont Fleuri Dawgz 67-63, MBU Rockers defeated Ex-Champs 87-52 and Praslin warriors edged LMS Jazz 51-50.
