Cable & Wireless Foundation reaches out to the Inner Islands |20 May 2005

The Foundation was set up for the sole purpose of establishing and building partnerships with local charitable and community organisations focusing on groups with special needs.

A donation of R10, 000 was made to the La Digue disabled on March 31 while a cheque for the same amount was presented the following day to the Praslin disabled during a cocktail hosted by Cable & Wireless Seychelles.

On hand to receive the donations from the company's chief executive officer, Usman Saadat, were the chairpersons of the La Digue and Praslin disabled, Peggy Payet and Carmelle Gappy respectively.

Thanking the Cable & Wireless Seychelles Foundation for the generous donation, Mrs Payet said  the money would be used to equip a daycare centre, which is going to be constructed for the disabled in the near future, with some basic facilities.

For her part Mrs Gappy said she was grateful for the donation and added that the money would be used to provide training facilities for all members of the disabled community of Praslin and to purchase athletic equipment and training kits.

Mr Saadat said the Foundation was now bringing the benefits of its work to the islands of Praslin and La Digue.

"The fact that the disabled communities on both islands did not seek out Cable & Wireless for donation, reinforces the objectives of the Foundation, that is, pro-active involvement by the company to find appropriate causes to assist," he said.

Under the slogan, "A helping hand for a stronger community," the Cable & Wireless Seychelles Foundation is focused on actively contributing in the strengthening of communities in which the company lives and work.

The Foundation was successfully launched in March 2005 at the School of the Exceptional Child, where a number of items were donated to the school in the presence of government officials and other dignitaries including the Minister for Education & Youth, Danny Faure.
