Farmers association to move into new office |23 May 2005

SFA chairman Serge Benstrong spoke of the move during the SFA annual general meeting held recently at the Anse Royale Community Centre.

The association’s office, which was based at the Farmers Training Centre, had to be relocated following the replacement of the school under the portfolio of the Ministry of Education and Youth.

Apart from the relocation of its new office, other issues on the farming agenda were raised at the meeting, such as the quality of animal feed produced by the Seychelles Marketing Board (SMB).

According to Mr Benstrong, farmers were not satisfied with the quality of animal feed produced by the company, and he said tests carried out by the Seychelles Bureau of Standards confirmed that the quality of the products were below standard.

"The farmers' association has brought the concern to the attention of the National Consumers' Forum and a meeting with the representative of SMB is being sought," Mr Benstrong added.

Members also discussed the unavailability of fertilisers and pesticides, which they said prevented them from producing at the levels they desired.

Farmers were also briefed on the new Farmers' Incentive Bill and registration criteria.

Another meeting is expected to be held on La Digue in a bid to increase the SFA’s reach and to mobilise farmers across the country to join the association.
