World No Tobacco Day-Drive for new smoke free areas begins |30 May 2005

This will be done through the release of 10,000 stickers with the message "Car and home, smoke free environment."

They will be handed over by sponsors Vijay Construction to the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MHSS), who will in turn give them to Seychelles Licensing Authority for distribution.

The ceremony will be the start of this year's World No Tobacco Day activities to be observed during the week under the theme, "Health professionals in tobacco control."

Doctors, nurses and other health workers on Mahe, Praslin and La Digue will attend a series of seminars aimed at helping those among them who interact with patients to detect smokers and help them quit the habit.

The ministry will also distribute leaflets on smoking cessation to health professionals, along with posters with the words "Intervene now and help your patient to quit smoking."

A number of health centres will also run activities to mark the Day.

The World Health Organisation is among the campaign's sponsors along with Vijay Construction and MHSS.
