Fewer flights affect SMB’s imports of perishable goods |31 May 2005

As a result, SMB’s weekly importation of perishables has had to be curtailed from 16 - 18 metric tons to 6 – 7 metric tons, explains a communiqué from the SMB.

The main products affected are tomatoes, capsicum, beans and pineapples.
According to SMB most of these imports are from Italy and Singapore.

“Earlier from Italy there were two flights a week and SMB used both flights to bring in fresh produce. For the past few weeks now, Air Seychelles has been operating only one flight from Rome reducing our supply capacity by half. From early May, the

Air Seychelles flight from Singapore has suspended operations temporarily, stalling any perishable imports from this source market,” explains the communiqué.

It is to be noted that fruits and vegetables are not a monopoly of SMB. Other importers have been bringing in perishables in the recent past.
