Lions Club dedicates new bus shelter to Seychellois people

This follows the construction of an additional bus shelter next to the one which was already in use.

The new bus shelter, a gift from the Lions Club of Paradise Seychelles to the Seychellois people, has been sponsored by Allied Builders, which was also the contractor in charge of its construction.

Mrs Benstrong and Vice-President Belmont unveils the plaque to inaugurate the new bus shelterThe inauguration of the new facility took place on Independence Day (June 29), during a dedication ceremony attended by Vice-President Joseph Belmont; the former Mayor of Victoria, Florence Benstrong; officials from the Department of Land Transport and representatives of the Lions Club of Paradise Seychelles.

Being the most congested bus stop in town, especially during peak hours, the additional shelter space afforded by the new facility has been most welcomed by bus users.

It also couldn’t have come at a more opportune time, especially now that the country is going through a spell of rainy days.

Vice-President Belmont addressing guests at the inauguration ceremonyNoting that the Government greatly appreciates the kind gesture of the Lions Club of Paradise Seychelles in coming forward with the idea to put up another bus shelter at this location, Vice-President Belmont said it is a fine example to be followed by other voluntary organisations at a time when (Government) has plans to put up about 100 bus shelters across the country.

Congratulating Allied Builders which has sponsored the entire cost of this project to further the charitable work of the Lions Club, Vice-President Belmont presented an engraved shield to the building company in appreciation of its dedicated contribution.

For her part, Mrs Benstrong noted that within one year of its chartering, the Lions Club of Paradise Seychelles has engaged itself in a number of charitable work for the people of Seychelles and this latest project (the new bus shelter) is a great endeavour that will benefit a large number of common people in this country.

She added that every support should be extended to the club to further enlarge its activities aimed at bettering the welfare of the needy in society.

The President of the club, Lion V. Sivasupramaniam, while welcoming the large number of guests present said, “We are proud to dedicate this bus shelter to the people of this country on an important day as the Independence Day anniversary and this is not to be the last one; within a short time, we hope to dedicate another extended bus shelter at Plaisance.”

Mr Sivasupramaniam also revealed that the construction of the bus shelter, wholly sponsored and undertaken by Allied Builders, has cost SR125,000.

Mr Sivasupramaniam also availed of this occasion to let those present know that the Lions Club of Paradise Seychelles has been judged as the “outstanding club” in the district it falls. The district comprises Kenya, Ethiopia and Seychelles.

“This achievement encourages us to be more involved in our charitable work,” added Mr Sivasupramaniam.
