More fishing records fall in Seychelles waters

While fly fishing in the Aldabra group, Jodie L. Johnson of Peterborough, New Hampshire, USA landed a giant trevally weighing 16.32 kg in eight minutes, while fly fishing with a 4 kg tippet. Last year Johnson recorded over 50 saltwater and fly world records and is being honored as the top female angler in the IGFA World Record Achievement Awards for 2006.

“It feels great achieving this record and also being a SeycRecord holders Johnson with her giant trevally (left) and Houareau with his doublespotted queenfish hellois to have one in the record books,” commented Mr Houareau. “One usually finds foreigners winning such awards so it feels good to know that a Seychellois has actually done it.”

While Seychelles’ outer coral islands have a reputation for record catches, Mr Houareau wanted to prove that fishermen could potentially break records around the inner islands like Mahé as well.

Seychelles’ rich waters are increasingly becoming a major attraction for many travellers, and Houareau’s record could be considered proof that avid fishermen can enjoy top-flight fishing experiences even while residing on the more easily accessible inner islands.

"It's great news from a tourism perspective, and it's another tool to help us in promoting this important niche for the industry," said Nick Watson, the Seychelles Tourism Board's PR coordinator.

The exciting fishing to be found in Seychelles is also highlighted in the annual International Game Fishing Tournament, which will be held from March 10-16 next year.
