Parastatals, authorities, statutory agencies and councils-President looks at boards of directors |01 August 2007

The reconstitution, where required, becomes effective today, August 1.

There are some 40 parastatals, councils, authorities and other national bodies in Seychelles performing various functions at the service of the population. They are involved in various activities such as airline operations, banking, international business, trading, manufacturing, public transport, broadcasting, islands development, housing, public utilities, sports, arts promotion, petroleum, port management, tourism, small industries, fishing, consumer protection, environment, means-testing, the family, and the welfare of the disabled and the elderly.

President Michel has, on various occasions, spoken of the need to transform the way we work. His aim is to create a more efficient public sector where there is less bureaucracy. His wish is also to bring the agencies closer to the people, and to assist those who are truly in need faster and more efficiently.

The President is overseeing the transformation of the Seychelles economy, whereby the government is reducing its role in wealth creation in favour of the private sector. The few remaining parastatals, described as strategic, are adapting to the new competitive environment.

President Michel said at the start of the review of the boards of directors: “The national bodies have been set up to perform various functions, mainly as service providers, regulators and facilitators. It is expected by government and the population that they perform their functions for the nation’s betterment.”

“As we transform the way we work in this country, the national bodies take on a more dynamic role. We have set the target to double the national wealth in 10 years. The wealth should benefit the whole population. These agencies are means to help us achieve results.”

After the reorganization of his government, announced on July 2, the ministries and departments are now in the process of finalising their own internal restructuring. The President had given the Ministers full latitude to do so within a timeframe of one month. The changes, to be announced by the ministries individually, will be implemented as of today.

A list of all members of the different boards of directors of parastatals and statutory bodies will be published in tomorrow’s issue of Seychelles Nation.
