Football: Barclays League Division One-La Passe hold St Michel to a draw

On the same day on Praslin, Lightstars shared the points with St Louis Suns on a similar score whilst on La Digue, Anse Reunion continued their progress with a hard fought victory over Foresters.

It was the third consecutive match that league champions St Michel failed to score and thisSt Michel’s Don Anacoura (No 10) fights for the ball in Saturday’s strongly fought contest against La Passe must be worrying to their coaching staff especially as their top marksman Philip Zialor had an off day on Saturday.

La Passe started brightly and should have taken the lead in the second minute as Malagasy Judicael Mohisoa pounced on a defensive error to shoot at goalie Nelson Sopha.  The ball deflected to Stephan Morel who looked odds on to score but Lorenzo Mathiot cleared on the goal line as his fellow defender Neddy Rose fouled the La Passe midfielder but was not punished by referee Gerald Gonthier who had replaced Gonzague Boniface as the referee as the latter had a muscle pulled during warm up.

As for Morel, he could not continue the match as a result of the injury sustained from Rose’s tackle and was replaced by Ron Ladouce.

In the 13th minute, Malagasy Asman Abdou opened up St Michel’s defence to set up Mohisoa but he shot weakly at goalie Sopha from a great scoring position.

From then on St Michel raised their game and on the half hour mark, Malagasy Amisy Voavy rolled the ball into the path of colleague Pascal but he delayed his shot and finally shot in the side netting.

A minute later, St Michel had a glorious opportunity as Nestor Benahovy played a neat one-two with Don Anacoura but the latter’s attempted lob was thwarted by goalie Vincent Euphrasie who was quick off his line.

In the 32nd minute, Zialor linked up with Amisy and the former’s low shot was smothered by goalie Euphrasie.

In the second half, St Michel continued to carry the game to La Passe and in the 50th  minute, Zialor saw his free-kick deflect to Neddy Rose in the penalty area.

But the ball fell on his weaker right foot and he ballooned it over the cross-bar.

A minute later, La Passe almost broke the deadlock as Mohisoa released Abdou but Lorenzo Mathiot produced a great recovery tackle to deny the Malagasy danger man.

In the 54th minute, the two La Passe front man combined again as this time Abdou threaded a pass to Mohisoa but goalie Sopha produced a fantastic block to parry the goal bound shot.

Four minutes later, St Michel went agonizingly close as Pascal went on a mazy run and his fierce shot was tipped over the cross bar by goalie Euphrasie.

La Passe continued to be dangerous on the counter and on the hour mark Mohisoa flashed a glancing header just wide from Abdou’s sweeping cross.

In the 67th minute, Amisy stole the ball from a La Passe defender to exchange passes with Benahovy before letting fly a cracker but goalie Euphrasie, who had a great match, was equal to the task.

La Passe threatened to steal the points in the 80th minute when Abdou stole the ball from Nigel Freminot but goalie Sopha saved his team’s blushes with a superb stop.

In the dying seconds, St Michel thought they had secured the points as Zialor’s downward header from Anacoura’s free kick, looked destined for the net but goalie Euphrasie threw himself to the ground to clinch the ball to leave the match goalless.

La Passe coach Marius Fanchette felt his team played quite well and even had chances to win the match.

Anse Reunion v/s Foresters

Anse Reunion came from behind to inflict on Foresters their third defeat on the trot.

Francis Nourrice opened the scoring for Foresters in the first half.

The boys of coach Vojo Gardasevic though came back strongly in the second period with goals from Malagasy Jocelyn who had returned to Anse Reunion and was playing his first match.

Jude Bibi secured all the points for this team.
