Special service to mark day of midwife

Father Alcindor leading the service

The event, organised by the maternity unit at Victoria hospital, was held at the Red Roof building.
Since 1991, May 5 has been set aside by the International Confederation of Midwives to honour this group of workers, and this year’s theme is Midwives and women – a partnership for health.

The idea is that they can use this special day as an aid in developing their profession and achieving better outcomes for women and babies.

International Day of the Midwife gives members of the public the chance to appreciate and value midwifery. It also gives midwives the chance to bring their work, in all its dimensions, to the notice of communities.

Among the congregation attending the service led by Father David Alcindor was Minister for Employment and Human Resources Development Macsuzy Mondon, chief executive of the Health Services Agency Marise Berlouis and other health officials, leader of the opposition in the National Assembly Wavel Ramkalawan and other members.

In his sermon, Father Alcindor said the day calls for reflection on the role and importance of midwives.
He congratulated them for their work, which he said is full of compassion as they are witnesses to new lives being born every day.
