Fisheries in focus during EU commissioner’s visit |15 May 2009

Mr Borg and his delegation, who are expected this afternoon, will be here at the invitation of the Seychelles government, and he will meet President James Michel shortly after his arrival.

The EU fisheries and maritime affairs commissioner will have talks with Minister for Environment, Natural Resources and Transport Joel Morgan, Minister for Foreign Affairs Patrick Pillay and high-level government officials.

He will also meet representatives of the private sector and others involved with fishing and the maritime industry.
The talks will centre on the fisheries partnership agreement between Seychelles and the European Commission, port infrastructure development and the review of the external dimension of the EC’s common fisheries policy.

Also on the agenda will be the battle against illegal, unreported and unregulated fisheries in the Indian Ocean, fisheries surveillance, trade issues, the impact of piracy on Seychelles and the region, cooperation in maritime affairs and the meeting of fisheries ministers from the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of countries next month.

The visit is expected to strengthen and open up new avenues of cooperation between Seychelles and the EC in fisheries and marine development and investment.
