Athletics-Good turnout expected for World Athletics Day Meet and River Star competition |15 May 2009

Under-16s and under-18s will take part in the World Athletics Day Meet in the morning, and if they cannot resist the temptation to watch the older athletes compete in the afternoon and have enough stamina, they can register to take part in the River Star competition.

The 2009 World Athletics Day Meet will start at 10am, and the young athletes from schools around the country will compete in track and field events like shot put, high jump, long jump, triple jump, 80m, 150m, 1,000m, 80m hurdles and 100m hurdles in two age categories – under-16 and under-18.

They will receive promotional items such as T-shirts, pins, posters and certificates given to all athletics federations by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

The Seychelles Athletics Federation will give out medals to the top-three finishers in each event on the programme.
The names of all the winners will be sent to the IAAF to enter the World Athletics Day 2009 draw.
In the afternoon, at 3pm precisely, the Stad Popiler will host the annual River Star competition.

Competitors in the youth (under-18), junior (under-20) and senior (over-20) categories will take part in 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 4x100m relay races on the track and in three field events – shot put, long jump and high jump.
