EU commissioner in fisheries talks |16 May 2009
Mr Borg, who is also responsible for maritime affairs, said while here he would also like to explore the EU’s involvement in increased surveillance of the seas, given the growing threat of piracy.
“Pirates are moving further south, and we are asking how member states of the EU can provide further security for the area to prevent piracy affecting merchant shipping and fisheries,” he said.
Mr Borg said the EU is looking at its own fisheries policies so as to reform them and is working with Seychelles to renew existing agreements when they expire.
He said during his visit he will visit a number of facilities – his delegation toured the Indian Ocean Tuna factory yesterday afternoon.
