Drug trafficker gets 11 years in prison |23 May 2009

Barbe’s conviction followed his arrest in April 2008 by officers of the National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDEA). At the time of his arrest, he had 402.4g of heroin, hidden among some kitchen utensils.

The street value of heroin seized during the arrest is estimated at over R1,600,000.

The arrest by the NDEA followed a lengthy information and intelligence gathering process, which resulted in sufficient evidence being presented at the initial hearing for Barbe to be remanded in custody at the Montagne Posée prison until his trial.

NDEA officials welcomed the 11-year sentence given to Barbe, describing it as sending a strong message that importing and dealing in heroin will not be tolerated.
The NDEA can be contacted in confidence on 781450.
