Desjoyeaux leads Nicolas Feuillatte to Seychelles Regatta win |23 May 2009

As predicted, twice Vendée Globe winner Michel Desjoyeaux will finish as champion.

The French star sailor, in the Nicolas Feuillatte boat – a Leopard 43 catamaran – won Thursday’s seventh race to bring his victories to five. Other than race number seven, Desjoyeaux won races one, two, three and five.

He will take the start of today’s final race with seven points after his worst finish – a third position in race number six – was discarded. If the worst comes to the worst and he finishes last in today’s race, he and his crew will end the competition on 10 points as their 10th place finish will be discarded, and nobody can catch him.

The rest of the field can still chase the runner-up spot now held by the CPR Decoration boat with 17 points.

Skippered by Englishwoman Samantha Davies, CPR Decoration won the other two races of the regatta – races four and six.

The other positions in the overall standings are occupied by Keneos Aubriet (skipper Romain Attanasio, with 23 points), Lady Anya (skipper Dee Caffari, with 24 points), Rome Team (27 points), Chagneau (27 points), C-Team (35 points), Air Seychelles (45 points) and Tera Cognita (45 points).

The organisers have decided to reduce the number of races from 10 to eight because of the weak winds.
