Time to honour our children, says First Lady

01-June-2009

The text of her message is as follows:

“Children’s Day is an annual event of great importance to all of us. It is a time to promote First Lady Nathalie Michelfriendship and understanding among children and among adults. It is a time to honour our children and to make their needs and aspirations known.

“Celebrating this occasion represents yet another milestone in our commitment towards our children and an affirmation of the love and the support we extend to them.

“Children’s Day is dedicated to childhood, and we should celebrate this day in some special manner, as we live childhood just once.

“This day serves as a reminder to each and every one of us to renew our commitment to the welfare of children and teach them to live by the example we set. Children see their parents and learn.

“Parents should understand the hidden talents in their children. Children have real potential if their talents are brought to light early. This is why we all need to set a good example, every day and every moment.

“Children who grow up with respect from others will become individuals who respect others.

“Children’s Day represents our commitment to providing our children with a safe and loving environment in which to grow, as well as giving them ample and equal opportunities through which they can develop and contribute to the progress of our nation.

“Our country has made much headway in the protection and promotion of children’s rights, and this reflects government’s determination to achieve the millennium development goals.

“Our dream for our children is for them to inherit a more peaceful and harmonious world, a safer environment, and to have a better quality of life.

“The best way to change the world is through our children. And we can do it together with our children.
“Happy Children’s Day!”
