Handball: Mohan Shopping Centre national league-Defending champs march on |10 June 2009

On Saturday at the Palais des Sports, Rybar came into the Mohan Shopping Centre-sponsored league match against Arsu mindful that they had lost 28-30 to the same team in the Curtain-raiser competition earlier in the season.

With nine goals, Czech player Leona Zacek led all scores and Rybar to a 26-24 win (half-time: 12-10). It was, in fact, the fourth consecutive victory for two-time defending champions Rybar, who are well on course for a third league title in a row.
Coached by Danny Philoé, Rybar sit at the top of the six-team standings with 12 points, while Arsu, who got six goals from Thelma Sauzier, are second on 10 after three wins and a loss.

Durantha Brothers’ four-game win run was checked by a short-handed AC Brothers, who were missing five players – Rancy Riaze, Kenneth Henry, Nickson Melanie, Revens Louise and Ronald Melanie – through suspension.

Although AC Brothers held a two-point 15-13 half-time lead, Durantha Brothers equalised in the second period and led in the dying minutes. In the end, they had to accept a 26-26 draw.

Despite this, Durantha Brothers still lead the standings with 13 points after four wins and a draw, while AC Brothers are second on seven points. They have three victories and a draw to their name.

The five AC Brothers players were suspended for their part in a dispute during a recent league match with PLS Hurricanes.
Riaze has been banned for two years, Henry for three games, while Nickson Melanie, Louise and Ronald Melanie will sit out two games.

Three PLS Hurricanes players have also been banned – Nelson Laporte (three games), Curtis Esther and Leeroy Samedi (two games each).

All eight players will have to pay R200 to play again after serving their suspensions.
The match, which was halted by referees Jason Fred and Alix Dufresne early in the second half, will be replayed at a later date and only players who featured on the team-sheet for the original fixture will be allowed to play. The suspended players, although they will have served their punishment, cannot be selected.
