In the National Assembly-Seychelles ‘committed to international sports events’ |27 June 2009

The Minister for Community Development, Youth, Sports and Culture said in the National Assembly on Tuesday that such events are the Francophonie Games in September in Lebanon and the next Commission de la Jeunesse et des Sports de l’Océan Indien games in Reunion in August next year.

Mr Meriton was answering a question from elected member for English River Roy Nibourette, who had asked him to explain the various difficulties in financing Seychelles’ involvement in high-level regional and international sporting events.

He said with the introduction last year of economic reforms, the cost of carrying out sports programmes and organising competitions and sporting events has risen at all levels.

As a result, many teams have been unable to take part in regional and international events in spite of an increase in financial help from the government.

Mr Meriton said this has also called for the National Sports Council as well as the ministry to review the sports strategy for the coming three years.

He said in spite of all constraints there are sports federations that carry out fundraising activities and seek sponsorship from the private sector through their own contacts, and this allows them to take part in certain regional and international sports competitions.
