Govt notes report on alleged human trafficking |11 July 2011

The report also talks about prostitution in the country.

Mr Shamlaye said while there is some prostitution – which has in some cases been made worse by drug abuse – human trafficking is not known to exist here.

He said prostitution is being addressed through the moral renaissance drive President James Michel recently announced, which is being dealt with by all sectors of the society.

“All the same the report encourages us to look at the issue of human trafficking concerning our country or our citizens who go abroad.

“While we think the report is somewhat confused on certain points, we think it is useful and we should pay attention to it and see how we can address certain things from our own conclusions that we need to address,” he said.

He said trafficking involves people, usually women or children being moved in a controlled manner against their will for sex exploitation, removal or organs or some forms of slavery.

At suggestion there may be a few Seychellois who are lured to other countries on the promise of jobs only to find themselves trapped by people bent on abusing them, Mr Shamlaye said Seychellois should verify their invitation for jobs with the departments of employment, immigration and the police before leaving Seychelles, and ensure their relatives are well informed about their movements.
