Athletics-Lou Toy clocks 100m PB in Daegu

The photo-finish of the women’s first 100m heat of the preliminary round. Lou Toy is second right with a PB of 12.29 seconds

Competing on day one – Saturday August 27 – in the preliminaries, Lou Toy finished second in the first of the five heats to qualify for the second round. Only eight sprinters were faster than her in the preliminaries and she beat 26 others.

She set her previous PB of 12.48 seconds at the 10th African Junior Athletics Championship at the UB Stadium in Gaborone, Botswana, in May.

In the second round in Daegu on Sunday, which included seven heats, Lou Toy mixed it with the best in the world who were lining up in the blocks for the first time in the competition. She ran in lane three of the second heat and stopped the clock at 12.35 seconds.

The young sprinter’s time was not good enough to earn her qualification to yesterday’s semifinals with all recognised contenders present to challenge for a place in the final which was also expected to be raced yesterday.

Meanwhile, Seychelles 200m record holder Henriette will take part in the 200m race on day 7 – Friday September 2.

Leeroy smashed Neddy Marie’s three-month-old 200m record of 21.60 seconds with a time of 21.42 seconds on Saturday August 16 at the just-ended Indian Ocean Island Games to win the silver medal behind Mauritian gold medallist Fabrice Coiffic (21.19 seconds).
The two athletes are being accompanied by coach Joseph Adam.
