Badminton-Seychelles win team event bronze medal

The Seychelles team

The Seychelles team comprise Georgie Cupidon, Cynthia Course, Steve Malcouzane, Alisen Camille, Kervin Ghislain and Danielle Jupiter.

In the semifinal, Georgie Cupidon and Cynthia Course teamed up in the mixed doubles to beat Ibrahim Adamu and Grace Daniel 2-1. After losing the first set 13-21, Course and Cupidon upped their game to win the second and third sets 22-20 and 21-19 to give Seychelles a good start.

In the men’s singles, Steve Malcouzane lost 0-2 (16-21, 7-21) against Joseph Abah Ineojo and in the women’s singles, Camille lost 0-2 (16-21, 12-21) to Susan Ideh.

In with a chance to put the two teams level, the Cupidon and Malcouzane duo lost the men’s doubles match 1-2 (23-21, 14-21, 20-22) against Jinkam Bulus and Olaoluwa Fagbemi.

The women’s doubles match was not played as Nigeria had already won the series after the fourth match.
The Seychelles team finished first in their group ahead of Mozambique and Uganda.

In their first group match on Tuesday, Seychelles easily trounced hosts Mozambique 5-0 before beating Uganda 4-1 in their second encounter. In the men’s singles, Steve Malcouzane dominated his opponent 2-0 (21-13, 21-11), while Cynthia Course won her women’s singles match 2-1(21-13, 15-21, 21-19).

Malcouzane then teamed up with Cupidon for the men’s doubles match which they won 2-0 (21-19, 21-14). In the mixed doubles, Cupidon paired with Camille to win the match 2-0 (21-18, 21-19).

The only Ugandan victory came in the women’s singles where Course had to abandon the match with a sprained ankle in the second set. Course had already won the first set and was leading in the second when she picked up the injury.

In the final played late on Wednesday, Nigeria stunned South Africa 3-2 to clinch the gold medal.
