SHRONE AUSTIN … second bronze medal win

She clocked 17 minutes 27.76 seconds (17:27.76) to finish third out of five swimmers. Only four countries – South Africa, Algeria, Tunisia and Seychelles – took part in the race won by South African middle distance swimmer Roxanne Tammadge in 17:03.22.

Shrone’s other bronze medal came in the 800m where she clocked 9:08.10.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, Shane Mangroo ended the competition with the 50m freestyle where he finished sixth out of eight swimmers in 25.78 seconds.

South Africa won the most medals in swimming in Maputo, amassing a total of 73 medals – 33 gold, 22 silver and 18 bronze – compared to 53 at the last Games in Algeria four years ago.

South Africa’s head coach Graham Hill was a happy man as he looked back on the team's performance in the pool. "We came here (to Maputo) to perform and we performed well," he said.
