Electoral Commission raises concern over threat on staff

“The Office of the Electoral Commission is concerned that certain irresponsible members of the public have over the past few days resorted to threatening senior staff of the Commission,” says a press release from the Office of the Electoral Commission.

“On two occasions the culprits stoned the house of a senior member of staff of the Commission.  These malicious acts are an offense under the Elections Act,” notes the press release.

“Any person who is found guilty of an offence under Section 51 of the Elections Act is liable to imprisonment for 3 years and a fine of SR20,000.

“Where a person is convicted of committing an offence under the Elections Act, the person shall, in addition to any penalty, be disqualified for a period of five years from the date of the conviction from being registered as a voter and from voting at an election or referendum.

“The Office of the Electoral Commission shall cause the name of the person to be deleted from the voters register.”
