Foundation stone for new Anse Aux Pins church blessed

Bishop Wiehe blessing the foundation stone

The celebration was held in the temporary church hall and was presided over by Bishop Denis Wiehe, assisted by a number of other priests, including Father Colin Underwood, Father Lonnie Adrienne and Father David Alcindor.

Present for the occasion was Vice-President Danny Faure and the Minister for Investment, Natural Resources and Industry Peter Sinon.

Bishop Wiehe blessed the foundation stone and said it is the start of a project which will bring many spiritual benefits to the followers of the church.

The new church will be built at the exact same site as the old one, and will be connected by a staircase to an older, undemolished part of the old church that was built in 1874.

Construction of the new church is expected to start early January next year and due to finish at the end of 2012.

The parish priest, Father Lonnie Adrienne, said the contractor for the project has given them an estimated cost of R9.1 million, which excludes benches, windows and electrical fittings, which they will supply themselves.
He expects the entire project to reach a total of around R10.5 million.

He also appealed to the public to give generously to the project and said anyone with donations could contact the church on 4376176.
