Dance students go ‘Mamma Mia!’ in end of year show

Held at the International Conference Centre, the event attracted a full house of people and began with a large number of children dressed as angels running out on stage to greet the audience.

Then started the first half of the performances to popular Abba songs from the Mamma Mia musical, such as Voulez-vous, Super Trouper, I have a dream, Dancing Queen, SOS, and Take a chance on me, all of which the audience loudly sang along to.

The school of dance head of programme, Daniella Rose, said they choose a musical each year to perform to, either a kids or adult one, and this year chose Mamma Mia, since it is a popular one, which the audience could relate to and could also sing along to.

A variety of dance styles were on display for the night, such as hip-hop, modern, ballet, ‘contemporain’ and jazz.

The dancers – as young as four and a half years old to adults – performed maginificently, and Michelle Fock-Tave clinched the best overall prize, followed by runner-up Willnette Joseph. The 8-11 year category prize went to Maia Gemell and the 12-14 year-old prize was grabbed by Guillys Michel, and the 15 and above prize was clinched by Emma Cadeau.

Ms Rose said it took them three and a half months to prepare for the show and its main aim was to show the progress that the students had made throughout the year.

“We feel very encouraged, since we performed to a full house, and also received positive feedback from the audience afterwards,” she said.

“We would like to thank the parents and staff of the national conservatory of performing arts for their support and we hope next year to have as great a show as this one or even a better one!”
