Sports Awards of the Year 2011-Male finalists

The winner will be crowned during the 28th Sports Awards of the Year ceremony on Friday January 20 at the International Conference Centre.

Athlete William Woodcock

High jumper William Woodcock has won the male athlete of the year title three times in a row, bringing his number of triumphs to four after a first win in 2007. Runner-up to outgoing Sportsman of the Year Terrence Dixie, Woodcock cleared the bar at a height of 2.15m to win the Indian Ocean Island Games gold medal and again finished on the medals’ podium with a bronze at the 10th All-Africa Games.

Badminton player Georgie Cupidon

Back as best male badminton player and twice former Sportsman of the Year in 2006 and 2007, Georgie Cupidon won a host of medals in international competitions – Indian Ocean Island Games and 10th All-Africa Games – during the 2011 season.

Badminton player Steve Malcouzane

Chosen as Sportsman of the Year 2009, Steve Malcouzane carried a knee injury last year but still performed well to win medals at the Indian Ocean Island Games and 10th All-Africa Games.

Footballer Archille Henriette

Laser sailor Allan Julie

A former five-time Sportsman of the Year in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005, Allan Julie won the Laser standard gold medal at the 10th All-Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique and was the Indian Ocean Island Games gold medallist.

Volleyballer Jones Mangroo

Weightlifter Elvis Jeanne

The 2011 season was one of the best for 36-year-old lifter Elvis Jeanne who competes in the 105kg category. He was a triple gold medallist at the African Senior Weightlifting Championship, silver medallist at the Commonwealth Senior Weightlifting Championship and triple gold medallist at the Indian Ocean Island Games.

Weightlifter Charles Siméon

Ranked fourth best sportsman overall in 2009, weightlifter Charles Siméon’s best results in 2011 came at the African Senior Weightlifting Championship where he won three medals – two silver and a bronze. He also reaped three gold medals at the Indian Ocean Island Games.

Windsurfer Bertrand Lablache

Aged 24, Praslinois windsurfer Bertrand Lablache enjoyed a good 2011 season with a gold medal at the Indian Ocean Island Games and a second place in the senior category of the Portimao European Formula windsurfing festival.
