Red Cross runs life-saving workshop on La Digue |10 February 2012

Some 20 young people working for different tourist establishments on La Digue and the local school are taking part in the five-day workshop which ends today.

The aim of the workshop is to equip La Digue youths with the necessary knowledge and skills in water rescue.  This workshop came after the RCSS conducted an assessment on the prevalence of drowning incidents and found that among the three residential islands, La Digue had the most alarming cases recorded in the previous years.

Most of those taking part in the workshop are interested in joining the Maritime Training Centre or work in the maritime sector in the future.

The workshop is funded by the Ambassador Special Self-Help Programme and upon successful completion those taking part will receive a competency certificate in life-saving.
