NDEA seizes R10m worth of drugs |08 March 2012

In a communiqué, the NDEA said it gave chase to a suspicious vehicle and intercepted the driver at Anse Royale on the night of Tuesday March 5 after he had tried to escape.

The communiqué adds that the drugs are high quality cannabis that was destined for wholesale supply to the local market.
The entire consignment would have produced several thousand separate deals destined for a number of local dealers for onward distribution throughout the country.

This seizure of drugs marks a second serious blow to the importers and traffickers. In December 2011, a somewhat larger seizure of cannabis was made at Anse Etoile, when R11.5 million worth of drugs were seized by an NDEA patrol operating in the area.

Meanwhile, in a separate development during the past number of weeks, the NDEA seized more than three quarters of R1 million in cash believed to be the proceeds of drug trafficking. The cash and other documentation have been referred to the Financial Intelligence Unit for further investigation.
