Table tennis: Curtain-raiser tournament-Record turnout for opening tournament

Anniessa Lepère     Nicholas Esther    Richard Morel

Godfrey Sultan    Christy Bristol

Organised by the Seychelles Table Tennis Association (STTA), the competition presented newly-registered players with the possibility to assess their progress, while the more experienced players were out to defend their titles and improve their game.

According to STTA chairman Francis Remie, the good turnout is the result of the association’s recruitment programme which normally takes place at the beginning of each year and during school holidays.

He explained that the association’s recruitment and training programmes include weekly training sessions at Anse Aux Pins, Beau Vallon and Roche Caïman.

He said Sunday’s attendance and results proved that the 2012 season will be very exciting and closely contested. Mr Remie also said the STTA will remain committed to recruiting and training more young players to bring the sport to a higher level – both locally and internationally.

Nine players registered for the men’s division one group which was played in two pools before moving into the cross knock-out stage. In the final, reigning number one player Godfrey Sultan beat Achille Dodin 4-2 to win the group. The set scores were 11-9, 11-4, 8-11, 8-11, 11-4 and 11-8.

Christy Bristol was the winner of the women’s division which was played on a league basis before the first two finishers met in the final. Bristol won the final 4-2 (11-8, 9-11, 11-7, 11-9, 6-11, 11-5) against Laura Sinon who was the league’s runner-up.

In the boys’ division two category, seven players battled in a league before the top four meet for the cross knock-out. In the final, Nicholas Esther beat Mick Créa 3-1 to win the group. The set scores were 11-6, 11-8, 9-11 and 11-9. Jean-Yves Ernesta finished third in the group.

The ladies’ division three group also started with a league before first-place finisher Anniessa Lepère and group runner-up Sheryn Jeannevol met in the final. After losing the first set 8-11, Lepère stepped up her game to tie the match at one set apiece by winning the second set 11-9. She then won the next two sets 11-7 and 12-10 respectively for a 3-1 win to emerge as the group winner. Zahira Khattab finished third in the group.

Richard Morel was the grand winner of the boy’s division three group which was also played in a group stage early on before the top four moved to the cross knock-out. Morel beat Darius Thomas 3-2 in the final. The set scores were 11-8, 9-11, 11-9, 6-11 and 11-7. Damien Ally was the third place finisher.

In the boys’ division four category, Aaron Clothilde beat Philip Sham Hong 3-1 (11-9, 11-8, 6-11, 11-2) to finish first, while Bertrand Dine was third overall in this group.

The winners received their prizes from STTA committee member David Low-Thion and coach Istvan Chikan.
The next competition on the STTA calendar is the April challenge which will be played on April 29.
