Only 10% check voters’ register |05 April 2012

The number represents only 10% of the 69,514 voters on the register, chief registration officer Jenny Adrienne told Nation yesterday.

She attributed the “record low turnout” partly to the many people who are checking if their names are on the register by mobile phone or through the electoral commissioner’s website www.ecs.sc.

“But the main reasons may be people’s assumption that since we have just voted the names are there anyway, although voter fatigue may also be keeping people away from checking,” she said.

Mrs Adrienne nevertheless said the commission is not counting those who check their names by phone, even though the commission is able to trace how many have done so.

“We only count those who have checked physically and got certificates.”
After removing those people who need not be on the register any more – for example the deceased – there were 69,395 voters, she said, so there have been 119 new voters added to the list.

Seychellois can verify if their names are on the voters’ register online or using a mobile telephone set thus:

Go to the website www.ecs.sc and click on the link Check Your Registration Status, enter the 11 digits of your national identity card number and type the security code shown. Your name and the district in which you can vote should appear.

To check by mobile phone, you should send your national identity card number by SMS to 9600 after which you will get an instant reply showing your full name and electoral area.
