Come celebrate Earth Day |16 April 2012

Seychelles has been celebrating Earth Day for a very long time now. This year’s celebration will be a youth environment festival at Port Glaud on Sunday April 22  from noon to 5pm.
Youth from all over Mahe will come together to celebrate the environment, and creatively express their concerns, hopes and ideas for an environmentally sustainable Seychelles.

With the help of non-governmental organisation Sustainability for Seychelles, a new local environmental community group has recently come into existence in Port Glaud called Aksyon pour lanvironnman Port Glaud.  The group has several youth members, who have proposed to host a national youth environmental festival, inviting young people from other districts to experience the unique mangrove wetland and other natural features of Port Glaud.

The festival would provide them with an opportunity to meet, network, and share their ideas and concerns through music and other artistic expressions. This event will be held on the grounds of the Catholic priest’s house, opposite the Catholic church.

With funding support from the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme and the 10th European Development Fund Governance Capacity Building Programme, a variety of activities will be organised in the afternoon. Government and non-governmental organisations will join together to organise snorkeling trips, rafting, music, and other exciting and educational activities.

Wildlife clubs members from all over the island are expected to come together to help in the coordination of these activities. The organisers are inviting everyone, especially Seychellois youths to come spend the day at the festival, have fun, but at the same time learn about environmental and sustainable development issues.
