R0.5m worth of drugs seized, four arrested |25 April 2012

The arrests occurred between April 4-18 at separate locations – Takamaka, Pointe Au Sel, Anse Royale and La Louise.

According to the National Drugs Enforcement Agency (NDEA), the amount of drugs being seized has increased significantly compared to the same period in 2011.

The amount of cannabis products seized has risen threefold from 7kgs to 23kgs, while the amount of heroin has risen tenfold from 4 grammes to 43 grammes.

The NDEA has also noted that the number of drug traffickers being arrested continues to rise despite the heavy penalties being imposed by the courts.

Meanwhile in a separate operation on Sunday, cash amounting to over R1 million, which the NDEA believes may be connected to drug dealing, was seized during the course of an NDEA operation in the south of Mahe.

On April 20, the Supreme Court sentenced 25-year old casual labourer from Les Mamelles, Mervin Ekow Cornelius, to eight years imprisonment after he was convicted of drug trafficking.

Trafficking in drugs carries a minimum sentence on conviction of eight years imprisonment, while conviction for possession of drugs can result in imprisonment for up to five years.
