As a result of the injury, Smalling, who arrived here on Sunday, will miss England's Euro 2012 campaign in Ukraine and Poland next month.

Signed by Manchester United from Fulham in January 2010, the 22-year-old has played three times for England and was expected by many to be a part of manager Roy Hodgson’s squad for the European Championships.

He made his competitive debut for Manchester United in the 2010 Community Shield victory over Chelsea which earned him his first career medal.

Smalling has represented England at various levels and is currently a member of the England senior squad. He played for the England Schools Under-18 team in early 2008 before making his debut for the Under-20 side and the Under-21 side in 2009. He made his debut for the England senior squad in the 3-0 win over Bulgaria on 2 September 2011.
